Reviews of ‘Something like this…’ by Sally Walker, flute and Emily Granger, harp

“…splendid new album by two Australian musicians… intoxicatingly beautiful” […]
“There is only one word for the performances: seraphic. The phrasing and articulation are meticulously poised and delivered in a beautifully natural way, especially the movement from Bach’s G minor sonata …. As an antidote to life’s stresses, this music, calming and cheering, should be on high rotation”
– Vincent Plush, The Australian (08.12.2023)

Something Like This… contains music of transcendent beauty, performed with finesse and technical expertise, by two performers who possess gilt-edged credentials.”
Sounds Like Sydney (31.10.2023)

truly magical” – ClassikON (27.11.2023)

Dynamic flute and harp music, old and new, released on 20 October 2023 (AVIE)

Extraordinary flute soloist Sally Walker and acclaimed harpist Emily Granger joined forces to release an album that defies preconceptions. Dynamic and skilful, this album includes intricate works by JS Bach and WA Mozart (who wrote a concerto for flute and harp) to hypnotic and moving works by Erik Satie, Elena Kats-Chernin, Lachlan Skipworth and more.

The album is being released on the UK-based AVIE label and celebrated via an Australian tour that includes Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and regional NSW; in its first two weeks since release, has already enjoyed over 300,000 streams.

Sally Walker is a Senior Lecturer in Performance at the Australian National University in Canberra, and Principal Guest Flautist with the ACO. She has had works composed for her ranging from early music to contemporary. Sally is an avid collaborator in diverse chamber music formations and a curator of festival programs. Emily Granger is a performer, recording artist and founding member of the Chicago Harp Quartet. With the quartet she has recorded albums, commissioned new works and performed at top venues across the United States. Her most recent solo album release is In Transit (AVIE).

The title track of the album is Something Like This… It was composed for the duo by award-winning Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, and originally for Sally and her late father, as he had unexpectedly expressed a late wish that he may have liked to have been a composer, and composed ‘something like this’ (as he and Sally listened to music together). Indeed the title track embodies the philosophy of the album, full of surprises and defying expectations of what something may be like, but not quite!
