The Meeting of Faust, Liszt and Debussy
A rare opportunity to hear virtuoso pianists Paavali Jumppanen and Timothy Young together in recital playing Franz Liszt’s epic Faust Symphony for two pianos. Inspired by Goethe’s drama, the symphony is a psychological exploration of the characters of Faust, Gretchen and Mephistopheles and reveals Liszt’s contribution as one of the most innovative composers of the nineteenth century.
Liszt’s fame during his lifetime was so wide-reaching that students flocked to Rome from all over the world to get some time with the great master. One such opportunity arose for none-other than French genius Claude Debussy.
Back in 1886, Debussy and his friend Vidal played this Faust Symphony 2 piano arrangement for Liszt himself and in return the evening after Liszt played his solo, Au bord d’une source (Beside a Spring), from his collection of works called ‘Years of Pilgrimage’.
The impact of Liszt’s playing on Debussy and in particular his pedalling was profound and undoubtedly the works of Liszt were inspiration for the young Debussy and his own compositional style.
Years later works like, ‘L’isle joyeuse’ (The Joyful Island), inspired by Antoine Watteau’s 1717 painting, The Embarkation for Cythera, would combine and advance both Liszt’s ground-breaking harmonic approach and his transcendental virtuosity.

Storm and sunlight
Emily Sun’s previous performances with the ASO left the audience wanting more. Now, the remarkable young violinist joins another superb Australian musician, pianist Andrea Lam, for a special recital. Grieg’s Sonata opens in darkness but its melodies soon shine with warmth and radiance. The six pieces in Sibelius’ suite range from a virtuosic Gypsy dance to a gentle lullaby. Fazil Say’s Sonata emulates the sounds of the wilderness in a visceral portrayal of our environment’s vulnerability. This compelling program highlights the beauty and fragility of the natural world.

BEETHOVEN 7 & BRUCH’S VIOLIN CONCERTO
This performance, conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, has two masterpieces to rediscover.
Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 is his most famous work, perfectly capturing the intensity of romance. Through all the emotions, there’s a wonderful sense of momentum urging us forward. You’ll be swept away by the shimmering technique of Australian rising star Emily Sun.
Beethoven’s Seventh is as monumental as it is familiar. One of the greatest symphonies ever written, full of power and longing, it dances with the joy and exhilaration of life.
Wagner’s Tannhäuser Overture leads our Great Classics program, and provides an opulent, cinematic introduction to an uplifting concert experience.*

Mostly Mozart – Drama of the Winds
A rich and colourful display of wind and piano.
The imaginative and versatile Finnish virtuoso Paavali Jumppanen has established himself as a dynamic musician of seemingly unlimited capability who has already cut a wide swathe internationally as a solo recitalist, orchestral collaborator, recording artist, artistic director, and frequent performer of contemporary and avant-garde music. In recent years Paavali Jumppanen has dedicated much of his time into performing cycles of the complete Beethoven and Mozart Piano Sonatas.
The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians, creating alumni that work around the world.
About the concert
Paavali Jumppanen performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program exuding vivid orchestral colours from Brett Dean, Martinů and Mozart.
Beginning with Brett Dean’s thrilling Polysomnography, a work which takes the particular and abstracts it, taking inspiration, in this instance, from sleep patterns. Followed by Martinů’s Sextet for Piano and Wind, a work that showcases his rich textural writing and colourful harmonic language. Finishing with the rich lyricism of Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds.
These woodwind-heavy pieces provide a less familiar palate over which ANAM musicians with director Paavali Jumppanen will paint a thrilling range of sounds and orchestral colours.

The Andrew Dickeson Trio is quite simply the epitome of swing. Drawing upon the classic trio sounds of Ahmad Jamal, Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson and more, but with their own unique musical fingerprint, they are the trio of choice for a great many local and international artists – with a rarely heard combination of sophistication, grace and swing. In their return to The Joan in 2023, you’ll hear the Trio’s stylish arrangements of best-loved standards from the Great American Songbook, classic tunes by jazz greats such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and some new original compositions too.
This is swinging, classic trio jazz at its very best!

IN AN EVENING SPARKLING WITH ANECDOTES AND STEEPED IN HISTORY, STAR COMBINATION DANIEL RÖHN & SIMON TEDESCHI MASTERFULLY SUM UP THE “GOLDEN AGE“.
Suffused with storytelling, fantasy and unbridled virtuosity, we are taken on a journey through the golden era of the 20’s and 30’s. Scintillating showpieces, gentle-hearted miniatures, Gershwin hits and Debussy’s last work and masterstroke, his violin sonata for violin and piano, make for a virtuosic and compelling evening of evocative works from one of the most exciting periods in artistic and musical history.
The era known as “The Roaring Twenties” was a world in which the arts were constantly on the move – a bubbling melting pot of creativity and ever-new ideas. Jazz music was emerging on the scene. Silent films were being replaced by “talkies”. And while Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse was taking his first steps on the screen in 1928 the film studios in Berlin and Hollywood were doing a roaring trade with films by Fritz Lang and Charlie Chaplin. This concert presents music to accompany this vibrant time with works by Kreisler, Korngold, Debussy, Gershwin and more.
“While the Roaring 20’s were a phenomenal bubble of creative explosion in the history of mankind, it is important to remember that this period of magical inventiveness sits between the two darkest and most destructive in modern history. From this we can remind ourselves that the most colourful and beautiful flowers spring out of a landscape burnt to a char, and … that it is through art that man remembers his better self.” DANIEL RÖHN
With Röhn and Tedeschi as our guide, we are ushered into the salons of bygone times, introduced to colourful and adventurous characters and stories, and led on an atmospheric musical journey through old Vienna, vibrant New York and Berlin of the roaring twenties.

Mozart & Beethoven Concertos
In 1787, a 17-year-old Beethoven made the journey from Bonn to Vienna—further than Melbourne to Sydney.
Did he meet the 30-year-old Mozart, in the few weeks they were in the same city?
Was there a metaphorical handing over of the baton of Classical music? Escape with us to this bright, elegant moment, as we perform Mozart’s final piano concerto and Beethoven’s first-written (but second-numbered) concerto, written just a few years apart.
Praised by The New York Times for his ‘power and extraordinary range of colours’, Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen is recognised as one of the leading living exponents of Mozart and Beethoven.
Now based in Melbourne as the Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music, he joins us to perform these iconic concertos.
