Debussy – Cello Sonata, arr. Benedict
Ravel – Habanera
Gershwin – Three Preludes
Kosma, arr. Tedeschi – Autumn Leaves
Viola virtuoso Roger Benedict and renowned pianist Simon Tedeschi perform masterpieces by Debussy and Ravel for the rich, mellow tone of the viola – the ‘melancholy dreamer’, as Berlioz described it – together with the piano, which is the closest an individual instrument comes to a whole orchestra. With its wistful sound, the viola gives a new and fresh character to these pieces, which, even now, seem radical in their conception.Tedeschi and Benedict perform four of Debussy’s evocative Préludes, as well as the composer’s kaleidoscopic Cello Sonata. We also hear viola arrangements of Ravel’s lyrical Violin Sonata – a youthful work, left unpublished at his death – as well as his sensual Piece in the form of a Habanera and the soulful, melancholy Kaddisch.

Wilma Smith joins them for Strauss’s poignantly beautiful Morgen. They pave the way for a Marathon highlight, a performance of Beethoven’s epic last piano sonata Op.111 by Melbourne’s own international Beethoven master, Paavali Jumppanen. Ngapa William Cooper at UKARIA
Composed and written by Nigel Westlake, Lior and Lou Bennett / With additional creative lyric content by Sarah Gory
It’s been almost a decade since composer Nigel Westlake and singersongwriter Lior shared their classic song cycle, Compassion, with the world. The pair unite again for the world premiere of Ngapa William Cooper (Grandfather William Cooper), a moving companion piece in which they are joined by an equally unaffected, yet deeply affecting voice: that of Yorta Yorta Dja Dja Wurrung singer, composer and language activist Dr Lou Bennett AM.
The liberating power of compassion is once again the theme, but this time the focus is on a still largely unsung Australian hero and revered Yorta Yorta elder, William Cooper. An early activist for the rights of First Nations peoples, Cooper’s achievements were legion – but it was a single extraordinary act of empathy that triggered Lior to set this new work in motion.
In late 1938, outraged by the way political considerations muted official responses to the Nazis’ Kristallnacht atrocities, Uncle William led members of the Australian Aborigines League on an eight mile walk to the German Consulate in Melbourne to deliver a letter of protest. This is believed to be the only such demonstration by non-Jews anywhere in the world; a remarkable display of solidarity from one dispossessed people to another and an event worthy of this dramatic, complex and radiantly beautiful score.
Vocalists Lior and Lou Bennett are joined by the Australian String Quartet, Kees Boersma (double bass), Rebecca Lagos (percussion) and Andrea Lam (piano) to perform this much-anticipated world premiere. The ASQ carry the balance of the concert with two fascinating works – Philip Glass’ “Mishima” String Quartet, an M.C. Escher illusion painted in sound, and Bryce Dessner’s arresting homage to the diaspora experience of his Jewish grandmother, Aheym.
The world premiere production of Ngapa William Cooper is part of Finding Our Voice. Finding Our Voice is supported by Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative, UKARIA and the following individuals and foundations: Ulrike Klein AO, Berg Family Foundation, The Yulgilbar Foundation, The Aranday Foundation, Playking Foundation and Julie Kantor AO.

American transcendentalists Emerson and Thoreau, and they are two of the personalities encountered in the Concord Sonata by Charles Ives. Pierre Boulez’s early opus magnum, Le Marteau sans maître, is an anarchistic work full of blissfully rapturous sounds. Like his French predecessor Debussy, represented here by his Violin Sonata, Boulez was inspired by exotic music. In Le Marteau, the composer creates a wholly new vocabulary based on various African and Asian traditions. Hans Tutschku’s Shadow of Bells concludes the evening with a meditative and hypnotic journey drawing its inspiration from Japanese temple bells.

Stradivarius BaROCK
ALEXANDRE DA COSTA – violin
JOHN MARTIN – piano
What would the music of the Baroque period have been like if Bach found himself with today’s Rock and Jazz?
Multi award-winning violinist Alexandre Da Costa, accompanied by pianist John Martin, breaks the boundaries in a daring showcase of the music of composers who lived in the times of Louis XIV, remixed
Alexandre and his Stradivarius of 1701 reboot Vivaldi in Rock, blending Bach with Boogie, and fusing Pachelbel’s Canon with pop. After revisiting the great Baroque masters, Alexandre rounds off his show with very personal versions of his favorite songs by Queen, Leonard Cohen, and maybe even Metallica… hold onto your seats, this will be a most amazing concert!
Featuring music from Da Costa’s album ‘Stradivarius BaROCK’, anyone who experienced Alexandre previously will book again very quickly. An extraordinary musician and performer, he has received one of Canada’s highest cultural distinctions the prestigious Virginia-Parker Prize, amongst many others.

Poème: Chamber Landscapes
At 8am on 24 May 1803, Beethoven was joined by the violin virtuoso George Bridgetower to deliver one of the most legendary premieres in music history – that of the great Kreutzer Sonata. The performance was enhanced by the now famous interruption of the violinist’s brilliant improvised cadenza, recreated in this performance (at noon, not the crack of dawn). The Sunrise quartet by Haydn raises the curtain on the final day of the festival weekend.

What would the music of the Baroque period have been like if Bach and Vivaldi wrote with today’s rock, jazz and electro-pop?
For anyone new to classical music or who wants to hear it in a completely different way – don’t miss internationally acclaimed ‘rockstar’ of the violin, Alexandre Da Costa, live on stage with jazz trio and the Penrith Youth Orchestra, for one show only.
Armed with his 1701 Stradivarius, this electrifying concert takes you on an exhilarating journey to revisit the composers who lived in the time of Louis XIV.
From Vivaldi as rock, jazz-tinged Bach and Pachelbel’s famous Canon with a backbeat, these are the classics as you have never heard them before – with some contemporary favourites by Queen, Hendrix and Leonard Cohen.
A unique fusion of genres, this symphonic celebration will delight, excite, and inspire music lovers of all ages.

Tamara Anna Cislowska & Gerard Willems Recital
From Beethoven to Gershwin, a spellbinding evening of illuminating solos and duets intertwined, performed on two grand pianos by two of Australia’s leading proponents for the piano – Tamara Anna Cislowska and Gerard Willems AM.
One of Australia’s most renowned and ARIA award-winning concert pianists, Tamara Anna Cislowska has performed and recorded world-wide to critical acclaim as a recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist. Earning international prizes such as the Rovere d’Oro, Tamara’s accolades include ABC Young Performer of the Year, the Freedman Fellowship and the 2015 ARIA award for ‘Best Classical Album’.
Gerard Willems AM is an Australian living legend of the piano whose performance and teaching career spans Australia, Asia and Europe. Boasting multiple ARIA Awards for his recordings of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas, five piano concertos with Sinfonia Australis, and the ‘Diabelli Variations’, Gerard is recognised as a pre-eminent specialist of the first Viennese school.
Singularly outstanding and together a tour de force, their virtuosic command of the piano delivers a fierce exposé of harmony, romance and elegance that transcends the senses.
As part of this musical feast a very special in conversation interview with Tamara and Gerard, will be presented by ABC Classic and Radio National Arts host Mairi Nicolson.
