Mostly Mozart – Drama of the Winds

A rich and colourful display of wind and piano.

The imaginative and versatile Finnish virtuoso Paavali Jumppanen has established himself as a dynamic musician of seemingly unlimited capability who has already cut a wide swathe internationally as a solo recitalist, orchestral collaborator, recording artist, artistic director, and frequent performer of contemporary and avant-garde music. In recent years Paavali Jumppanen has dedicated much of his time into performing cycles of the complete Beethoven and Mozart Piano Sonatas.

The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians, creating alumni that work around the world.

About the concert

Paavali Jumppanen performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program exuding vivid orchestral colours from Brett Dean, Martinů and Mozart.

Beginning with Brett Dean’s thrilling Polysomnography, a work which takes the particular and abstracts it, taking inspiration, in this instance, from sleep patterns. Followed by Martinů’s Sextet for Piano and Wind, a work that showcases his rich textural writing and colourful harmonic language. Finishing with the rich lyricism of Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds.

These woodwind-heavy pieces provide a less familiar palate over which ANAM musicians with director Paavali Jumppanen will paint a thrilling range of sounds and orchestral colours.
