4.5 stars

“With the MSO under Maestro Benjamin Northey, violinst Emily Sun gave a performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto that warrants recording”

“There were cheers too in the Melbourne Town Hall on Friday evening as Emily Sun gave a ravishing performance of Erich Korngold’s Violin Concerto. She is now a much acclaimed soloist with an international performing and recording career. Her recent recording for ABC Classics with pianist Andrea Lam, Nocturnes, was one of the highlights of last year’s releases.”

“From the outset, Sun’s honeyed tone and engaging stage presence elicited memories of old Vienna. In the second movement, her silvery harmonic suggested a love song between violin and orchestra; Shakespeare’s faeries dancing with Hollywood starlets. Sun tossed off the rollicking folk-fiddling of the finale with dazzling aplomb and assurance. It was a performance to relish and remember.”

“Overall, it is Emily Sun who leaves the most enduing impression from this concert. I do hope she gets to record the Korngold concerto with the MSO”
