2023 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address

Composer Elena Kats-Chernin delivered the 2023 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address on 9 October 2023 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to an invited audience.

The Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address is an annual platform of national significance, the single most important Australian forum for music discourse. It is named in honour of one of Australia’s great international composers, Peggy Glanville-Hicks. It was established in 1999 by the New Music Network, and custodianship of the Address transferred to The Australian Music Centre in 2018. An annual address, it offers a platform for an outstanding advocate of Australian music to raise contemporary issues and debates in music and challenge the status quo.

Elena Kats-Chernin is named as one of Australia’s greatest living composers. Having composed in nearly every genre including music for orchestra, chamber ensemble, choirs, film, theatre and dance, she has forged a formidable musical career. Kats-Chernin’s Address came from the perspective of working composer.

The Address was accompanied by a live performance of one of Kats-Chernin’s works, Chamber of Horrors, performed by harpist Emily Granger.
