International Women’s Day announcement: New commissioned piece by Elena Kats-Chernin will premiere at Australian Women in Music Awards

A new work by Elena Kats-Chernin, celebrating the ‘gutsy and strong’ women in Australia’s music industry, will be the celebratory feature performance at the upcoming Australian Women in Music Awards (AWMAs) on 18 May in Brisbane’s Tivoli Theatre.

The AWMAs made the announcement on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2022.

Elena Kats-Chernin’s new composition, titled Jubilissima, will be premiered at the AWMA ceremony in May. The piece has been especially commissioned for this year’s awards as “a hugely appropriate and uplifting addition to the performances on Awards night”.(Vicki Gordon,  AWMA’s Founding Executive Producer). Kats-Chernin said the name Jubilissima is her own invented word that evokes the celebration and her own sense of the gutsy, strong women in the music industry.

The premiere of Kats-Chernin’s work sits alongside her nominations as a finalist for AWMA’s  Artistic Excellence Award and the Excellence in Classical Music Award.

The work is a collaboration with Australian Brandenberg Orchestra’s Principal Trumpet Leanne Sullivan, an award winning artist of both modern and baroque trumpet.

“AWMA is such an important initiative that draws attention to the extraordinary work of leading creative women in Australia. I’m delighted to be part of such significant award that highlights and celebrates women’s achievements. I’m always amazed at the incredible power of women when they work together to create something new.” Kats-Chernin
