Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) presents
Sacred: Vingt Regards
The great compositional titan of the 20th century, Olivier Messiaen, wrote his monumental Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus (“Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus”) in 1944, towards the end of the Second World War.
This suite of 20 works for solo piano meditates on the infant Jesus, a subject often revisited in Messiaen’s music. A deeply spiritual man, he sought through sound to unite the celestial songs of birds, meticulously transcribed from nature, with intricate polyphony and transendental musical colours and textures.
Performed by Timothy Young, Paavali Jumppanen and the ANAM pianists in the surrounds of the Good Shepherd Chapel, this will be an absorbing presentation of one of the most distinctive and visionary works in the piano repertoire.
